José Castro Leñero was born in Mexico City, D.F. on April 24, 1953. He studied at the National School of Plastic Arts of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, UNAM, and at the Center for Plastic Research and Experimentation of the National Institute of Fine Arts, INBA, in Mexico City, DF He presented his first individual exhibition in 1976, at the San Carlos Academy of the National School of Plastic Arts of UNAM. In that same year he received the First Prize for Engraving in the XI National Contest of Students of Plastic Arts, House of Culture of Aguascalientes, Aguascalientes, Mexico. In 1992 and 1996 he was the recipient of the acquisition awards of the VI and VIII Rufino Tamayo Painting Biennial. Since 1997 he is a member of the National System of Art Creators. José Castro Leñero transmutes the images that come from drawings, photographs, graphs or photograms (his own or from the media) by exploring various traditional techniques and the resources offered by new technologies. His images, in perpetual transfiguration, acquire different meanings, new meanings, which are expressed in city landscapes, in movement, fragmented, unfolded; in intimate spaces, everyday settings, nature, portraits and self-portraits, faces and human figures, objects and close-ups that border on abstraction. Thematic and stylistic multiplicity characterize his work through the practice of various media: painting, drawing, engraving, photography and digital graphics and even some forays into the field of sculpture. Throughout his artistic adventure, José Castro Leñero "has experimented with a remarkable variety of ways of doing things ... and in this changing discourse a continuity can be seen", the Mexican academic Jorge Alberto Manrique quotes. In his constant search and experimentation, José Castro Leñero travels over images to intervene, remake, disrupt, recycle, transfigure them. The results of this process allow dimensioning his pictorial and conceptual resources.
