Jorge Patrón "Obra reciente 2"

Jorge Patrón

Jorge Patrón's work comes to life from the walks that the artist takes through the streets of the city of Mérida, finding traces of urban interventions such as graffiti, signs and stencils on pieces of old walls, and then removing them using the technique. of the strappo. This ancient technique consists of separating the layers of paint on a wall with a preparation and then removing the chromatic surface, making it transportable. In this way, Patrón acts as a collector of time, incorporating the different fragments from the streets to his studio, to create a new work.

His interest in the aesthetics of the popular and the local, alternating with references from international pop culture, generates associations through a collage of different times and styles that intertwine and connect his works with each other. Time, and the different ways in which the past emerges in our present, is a theme that resurfaces in each of his works, like childhood memories in the human mind. Characters from cartoons such as The Cow and the Chick, Looney Toons and The Simpsons are interspersed with paintings by the Italian expressionist Amedeo Modigliani and the French post-impressionist Paul Gaugin.

Patrón reconfigures everyday elements and familiar characters to suspend them at a common point in time, creating narratives in which their stories are physically and metaphorically intertwined in a new dimension. In turn, Patrón juxtaposes symbols of our contemporary culture, such as the monstera plant or the actor Johnny Depp, over representations of times past; Ming Dynasty porcelain with a dragon motif, a cubist nude, and ancient Greek vessels, connecting the past and present in unpredictable ways.

In this exhibition, Jorge Patrón investigates our reality and the passage of time. Transporting different fragments of the past to the same place, as if the artist used the strappo technique on time itself, where he manages to establish an alloy of different planes of the past.
