René Martín

La Habana, Cuba , 1952

René Martín was born in 1952 in Havana Cuba, since 1996 he has lived in Mexico. He studied architecture and graphic design, in 1979 he began his studies at the San Alejandro School of Fine Arts in Havana, Cuba. In 1985 he held his first individual exhibition and since then to date he has had more than 60 individual and collective exhibitions in Cuba, Mexico, the United States and Costa Rica. From the beginning his work is classified as landscape, later as surreal or tropical surrealism, the main theme of his work is tropical landscapes which include elements such as drifting eggs, fruits, stairs, umbrellas hanging from clouds, forks that are become palm trees, jungles that float in the clouds, etc. With these themes René Martín tries to promote the conservation of nature as well as the environment with a great sense of humor, using metaphor and symbology. The technique he uses is oil or acrylic on canvas, with cheerful, tropical colors that, together with the themes, make the viewer interact with the paintings, giving them their own interpretation.
