Gabriel Ramírez “Nada es mudo en la tierra”

Gabriel Ramírez

In the 1950s in Mexico City, a group of young artists generated a roar that dissolved the single route imposed by muralism and the Mexican school of painting. A whirlwind of autonomous voices that paved the way for an ideological liberation about the different ways of questioning, understanding and developing art in our country. For the first time, stripped of their didactic and representative function, artistic manifestations were able to pursue different paths as independent beings, ask new questions, find other points of connection and explore the inner worlds of the artists themselves in complete freedom. Gabriel Ramírez Aznar (1938) was part of that polyphonic phenomenon that at the end of the sixties formed the Salón Independiente and later we would know it as La Ruptura generation.

“Nothing is mute on earth” gives an account of the painter's intimate relationship with the world that surrounds him, of the subtleties and poetics that emanate from the work of an artist who has been nourished by the vital drive that lives in painting itself, but also of the other satellites that orbit the author's mind and that have grown alongside his pictorial practice, articulating a non-linear narrative: His relationship with writing and publishing projects, passion for cinema and filmographies, even his connection with galleries and artists at different times in his life become factors that have permeated Gabriel Ramírez's vision and his vast work, strengthening his ability to understand and approach painting as a living being, in constant state of mutation. This exhibition proposes a journey through the moments and chapters of the painterly life of the master Gabriel. A celebration of 64 years of the exercise of that freedom: the freedom to observe, resignify and transform the reality that he returns to us like a film director through his screen paintings; to create its own universe that is built with each brushstroke, where each painting simultaneously becomes a container for the whole, or, alternatively, part of an infinite sequence plane composed of presences that become letter, rhythm, sound, silences, language.

Thus, Gabriel's painting becomes a sound journey that begins by crossing the thick gardens full of expressionist creatures, women and animals of the sixties inspired by the CoBrA group, by the geometric and musical abstractions of the seventies, the dynamic centrifugal explosions of the eighties and the sharp splinters that make up the fragmentary figurations of the nineties; culminating with the most recent creations of 2023, where those latent presences resurface to the surface to be observed - or to observe us? - now, in this exhibition that aims to become a tribute at home, in his homeland. The same land that claimed him back in 1975 and since then has told stories in his ear that never stop being written; who continues to whisper to him, frame by frame, his secrets.
